About Chalk
The story behind Chalk.
Chalk researches a topic from a short list of approved education sites, explains it out loud, draws it on the board and asks questions to check it landed.
We are a small team, still in pilot, building the tutor we wanted for the learners the usual tools leave behind.
Why we exist
Every learner deserves someone patient enough to explain it again.
One-to-one teaching works. It just isn’t equally available. A teacher with thirty children cannot always stop for one, and private tutoring runs to tens of pounds an hour. Chalk exists to put an unhurried explainer in front of any learner who needs one — at their pace, in their words, for as long as it takes.
How we build

SEND-first by design
SEND is not a setting we switched on afterwards. It decides how Chalk speaks, what it puts on screen, how fast it moves and how it guides. Everything else is built on top of that.

It teaches, it doesn't tell
Hints, guiding questions and one step at a time. Asked outright for the answer, Chalk still guides the learner to it. That rule lives in the software, not in a prompt anyone can talk around.

Parents hold the controls
The account, the lesson history and the sources used in every lesson belong to the parent. Children under 13 never need an account of their own.

Easier to check than a promise, and harder for us to quietly drop.
Sell your data, or train on it
Lessons are stored so you and your child can look back at them. They are never sold and never used to train AI models.
Run adverts inside a lesson
No adverts, no upsells, no interruptions mid-explanation. A lesson is a lesson.
Hand over an answer because it is quicker
Being given an answer is not the same as learning how to reach it, so Chalk will not do it, even when asked directly.
Let Chalk off the approved list
It reads a short, fixed list of education sites and nothing else. It cannot browse social media, make purchases or open accounts.
